Joyas De Carballo

Honduras

Joyas de Carballo is a small community in the mountains of Honduras, near the capital of Tegucigalpa. Our long-term goal in this community was to bring reliable, clean water to the families of the community.

We completed our second assessment trip in May of 2009. During this trip we worked with Global Water Brigades to get estimates of what work needed to be done, and made what repairs we could during the trip. During our assessment trips, we measured the flow rate at the source and determined it was sufficient to provide water to the community, allowing for the growth rate for years to come. We also fixed the chlorination tank, which is the only sanitation measure currently being taken.

With the help of Global Brigades, a renovated system has been put in place that serves the community today.

This project won the Engineers Without Borders Premier Project award in 2011.

Unfortunately Marquette was not able to complete the post-implementation assessment report due to Marquette University's rule of not allowing any travel to Honduras. Fortunately with the help of Global Water Brigades and now Marquette EWB alumni the assessment was completed.
