El Aguacate Bathroom Project

Joyabaj, Guatemala

After the completion of the El Aguacate school project in October 2019, the community expressed a need for a bathroom and handwashing station to be built near the school. The school currently consists of five classrooms and enrolls 120 students in grades 1-6. The bathroom and handwashing station will allow both students and teachers to have easier access to restrooms and enable them to wash their hands before eating and using the bathroom. Having these facilities so close to the school will also get students used to using hygienic  practices and promote hygiene within the greater community.

This is a mini project that our chapter added on just this semester, so it is being completed with a slightly smaller team than usual and on a condensed timeline. With that said, the two project leads are working hard on designing the bathroom and handwashing station with the specific requests of the community in mind. The goal is to have a remote implementation take place this summer, but that will be dependent on the global Coronavirus situation. Once the design is built, though, it will have a huge impact on the students at the school in El Aguacate, and it will be one more benefit of the relationship between our chapter and the El Aguacate community and our work with them.
